This is definitely a mazda 323! Geo re-badged cars, the suzuki swift? I think was the first, and mazda 323 too? What were they like as a company? I don't have any experience with them outside of the usa

My best guess is a pontiac vibe?

This was the platform (slightly modified)that gm adopted for its first "world car" attempt, it was a very unusual choice really with a little 1256cc motor and it was a little fragile for a lot of countries. It was massively modified by Australia to become the Torana, which was an incredible car, and the can am in south Africa, which used a 302 z28 motor, I think that was it's ultimate incarnation!!!! The little chevette had some reasonable success in rallying with the 2300 motor in hs form too

Oh I fully agree, I thought I would really dislike the 4 banger, and I only took it as it was a cheap rental. The new crop of 300hp eco boost cars really surprised me, economical and fast, they tick a lot of boxes for me too. I think the mustang was a real suprise after the dismal camaro, I do like the challenger too, but that would have to be a v8.

@McSpeedAlaskanAdventures oh man it does take a while, the rehab on my arm was a lot less painful than I was expecting, so hopefully yours is the same. I wish you a speedy recovery sir, and remember not to do too much until your healed

@robertwalker1742 oh I fully agree the early marina had awful handling that became progressively better as they improved the suspension. Wider tyres and anti roll bars help a lot. The 1.8 was a flyer due to the gearing. I've never had a problem with exhausts, but I'll bet there was a bad batch of them produced!

@ianmax69 I think that's a real shame as it's a very nice colour combination, but it's probably too subtle for the outrageous 70s

So come back and tell me how much they cost you to restore when you've finished one of them and then let's way up how much it cost vs how much it's worth, including your time. Parts availability is horrendous for a p76, and the value of the finished car is low, so yes, it's not restorable by any means. I like the thought that you can look at this car and tell me exactly what condition it's in, I own it, I've assessed it, and I know exactly what it needs. I've been doing this for 30 years and have put 100s if not thousands of cars back on the road.

@@kingcountrytowing I've worked on my escort van for probably 2-3 months. Spent 300 for a brand new engine because of my contacts. Got 400 dollars of paint for free. I'm spending 400 on the carpet and roof lining and 800 for the rubber kits. 1500 bucks and a couple months it cost me, and whatever it cost me for mig wire and gas. Oh and it's a sundowner as well so it's pretty desirable. It's a pretty similar situation with my other cars as well.

@user-ik4in3pq2f you lost me at $300 for a brand new engine. Assuming it's a 2.0 pinto hc in escort spec with the different sump, and they haven't made a new one in 30 years $300 seems a fantasy figure. 3 months of 40 hour weeks is $64,000 at $100 per hour labour alone, so what's it worth right now?

@@kingcountrytowing yeah a university rebuilt it a couple years ago and and only ran it once. they legally can sell it so they gave it to a family friend and it's been in dry storage ever since, and yes it's a 2.0. I've always had stupidly good luck with these kinds of things. The carbys worth more than what I paid for it. Ran it for the first time the other day, sounds mint

Your 1981 corona sounds amazing, it's so nice to own a long term family car, especially one that was bought new. @doctormengele961 it's remarkable how badly they built the launch cars, and then put in patch fixes until version 2 of the cars came out, the word of mouth destroyed any chance they had of selling them. All the later cars were very much improved, but by then it was too late, poor management and non existent quality control ruined some great cars, the maxi, Allegro,p76, princess, marina, sd1, triumph stag, tr7, all had massive, easily solved problems that ruined they're reputations in the eyes of the public. Such a massive shame

Yessir assembled here in New Zealand by Thompson industries, I'll be restoring it next year

I soooooo should have taken this advice lol, I jetwashed it all out, it helped, but it never really went away
